What If ?

 What If ?

On Feb. 9th I attended TEDx Manitoba. It was an incredible day filled with various speakers, including Happy Monkey expert Aisha Alfa. Each speaker was given 20 minutes to deliver their message with the theme of the day being "what if?"

The speaker topics, delivery and ideas where very diverse and stimulate many thoughts in my own mind about what if...

I invite you to check out TED talks to hear some ideas worth spreading.

The day really got me thinking about what if...the world would take on the mantra of Happy Monkey Club even if it was only for a few days.

What if...we all smiled a little more? Try it right now. Doesn't that feel better. Did you know smiles are contagious? Stand in a room of people and just smile, see what reaction you get. Defuse a negative situation with a smile, it's a very powerful tool. Smile

What if...we all relaxed a little more? Next time someone or something upsets you, take a deep breath, now take another deep breath. In most situations there is nothing you can do that will immediately change a wrong or a mistake of another. So breath deep, think clearly, and know that in the long term it will all be fine.

On another note for relax, be sure to take at least 5 minutes each day to relax, stretch, meditate, do yoga and breath. You'll be amazed at the calming effect it has on your day.

What if...we all engaged in life a little more. A start would be to stop listening to that little voice in our head that says tomorrow. Tomorrow  I'll... start exercising, eat better, clean out that closet, call my parents, help a friend. How about we all commit to doing it today! Engage in life, don't wait another minute, do it NOW!

What if we all made a comittment to do these three simple things in our lives how would that change your world? How would that change the world around you? What if...

Mayonnaise Jar & Two Beers

This week I want to share with you an email a good friend sent to me who thought the Happy Monkey Club would enjoy this. I think he was absolutely right so here you go...

Mayonnaise Jar & Two Beers...a must read

When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and the 2 beers.

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls.  He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous 'yes.'
The professor then produced two beers from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed.   'Now,' said the professor as the laughter subsided, 'I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life.

The golf balls are the important things---your family, your children, your health, your friends and your favorite passions---and if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.

The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house and your car. The sand is everything else---the small stuff. ''If you put the sand into the jar first,' he continued, 'there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls.  The same goes for life.  If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff you will never have room for the things that are important to you.

Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Spend time with your children, Spend time with your parents, Visit with grandparents, Take your spouse out to dinner. There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal. Take care of the golf balls first---the things that really matter.

Set your priorities. The rest is just sand. One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the beer represented. The professor smiled and said, 'I'm glad you asked.  The Beer just shows you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of beers with a friend.

It's Five O'Clock Somewhere

It’s 5 o’clock somewhere

A classic Jimmy Buffet song that refers to having a drink when ever the feeling strikes and justifying it because it’s 5 o’clock somewhere got me thinking the other day…

Not only do I like the song, I love the message I took away. Now don’t get me wrong, I am not encouraging you to drink 24/7 but I am encouraging you to hear the message that I did.

We tend to get so wrapped up in schedules, work, running from here to there and we forget to live life.

We feel guilty because we work too much, we feel guilty because we don’t work enough. We forget to take time to play, laugh, and do something spontaneous. When was the last time you actually did something just for you and truly engaged in it no guilt?

I hope you can all say just yesterday but my guess is you can’t remember when.

I would like to challenge you to take 5 minutes to pick one thing you love to do just for yourself and schedule a time if you have to or just do it right now.

You could also make a list of all the fun, silly, happy things you love to do and keep it handy. Whenever the mood hits you, look at your list and pick something that will make you feel awesome.

  • Go for a walk
  • Call an old friend
  • Make someone laugh
  • Sign up for a Happy Monkey Club event
  • Blow bubbles
  • Dance (naked) or just dance
  • Skip
  • Smile at strangers
  • Sing out loud

The reality is that the perfect time to engage is life is NOW! As Jimmy Buffet says “it’s five o’clock somewhere.”

Perfect just the way you are!

I am currently down in Phoenix, Arizona at the Cactus Cup Hockey tournament with my son’s high school hockey team. I have to admit as much as I love my son and watching him play I came for the warm weather, hiking and a little sunshine. After all it is January in Winnipeg!

So far my trip has been fantastic. I have been on two amazing hikes, spent time with 3 great ladies, enjoyed a little hockey and had some time to sit by the pool enjoying the late day sun.  So what does all this have to do with being perfect just the way you are?

Well, I was sitting by the pool on Friday enjoying the late day sun and a cocktail, listening to 3 thirteen year old boys from Denver play with a football in the pool. I was enjoying their laughter and just hoping I wouldn’t get splashed too much. That’s when one of their team mates came up to the fence around the pool and yelled at his one buddy, “Tyler, why do have a t-shirt on in the pool?” Tyler’s response was, “ I’m just not comfortable with my body” and without missing a beat the boy at the fence says, “ Why buddy? All our bodies are perfect just the way they are.”

Well I’m not sure about you but I wanted to get up and hug that little boy at the fence and tell him just how wonderful he was for saying that to his friend in such a sincere way.

We all are perfect just the way we are and it took a 13-year-old boy to remind me of that the other day. Thank you.

Next time you are around someone questioning their own self-image (or you are doing it to yourself) be sure to let them know that they are perfect just the waythey are. We need to hear positive messages on a regular basis so start today being the messenger and remind everyone you are in contact with, including yourself just how perfect they truly are.

2012 is the year for you!

Happy New Year!

What does 2012 look like for you?  Do you have big plans or are you going into the year expecting the same old thing?

I spent two days skiing over New Years with my family and had a lot of time to think, talk and plan what my 2012 will be. My biggest realization was that I’m not going to sit back and live life day to day without taking advantage of every opportunity presented to me.  It’s so easy to get into a routine of work, cooking, cleaning, driving kids, sleep, wake up …repeat. Life is short my fellow monkeys don’t make excuses, don’t wait another minute, make a commitment to you to make 2012 your year.

I challenge you to take action on everything you can this year. If you get the urge to work out or join a fitness club, do it! Feel a desire to volunteer, do it!  Want to learn something new or take a risk, do it! Want to mend a fence with an old friend, do it! Want to make a stranger smile everyday? do it!

You have 5 minutes every time you have a new desire to take action. It's each to talk yourself out of it, but how about this year we talk ourself into it. It’s easy to just do the same old thing but it’s more exciting, fun and energizing to step outside the box.

Take advantage of Happy Monkey Club to help you stay on track, inspire you and provide opportunities to life a positive, balanced and happy life.  Use our experts to get you going in the right direction. Check out upcoming events and commit to ones that appeal to you.  Take 5 minutes each day to check out our tips, jokes and quotes.

Happy Monkey Club is for you, let me know what’s missing, what you like and how we can all inspire each other to

SMILE * RELAX * ENGAGE each and every day.

It’s your turn…

Thank you

2011 has been a great year for the Happy Monkey Club and I want to thank you all for joining me in my journey of living a positive, happy and balanced life while making a difference for our community.

I know there are bigger and better things to come, but 2011 saw a steady growth in our membership, the creation of the HMC Sharing Circle with the Winnipeg Foundation, numerous fun and educational events and since our inception we have been able to give over $35,000 back to various charities.  Now I call that a great start for a concept called Happy Monkey Club!

So thank you Happy Monkeys for being a part of our community. Whether you followed us on line, participated in one of our events, made a donation or simple chose to smile and send some positive energy out to the world, together we are building something great!

I am going to take the next two weeks to evaluate Happy Monkey Club and come up with a plan for 2012.  Happy Monkey Club will be bigger and better all the way round in 2012 and I invite you to continue making a commitment to yourself, your family and your community to live a positive, balanced and happy life.

I feel great every day even though the frustrations and the challenges come I have found a better way to deal with them and I thank Happy Monkey Club for that.

Join me in 2012 to spread the work, come out to some events and live your life to its fullest.

A sincere thank you to everyone and all the best over the holiday season and through out 2012!

Thursday Life Coaching tip

Create a budget for the next 5 days and stick to it! You’d be surprised how succeeding with a realistic and simple goal can boost your confidence! Instead of buying that tea, bring one from home! Walk or take a bus instead of driving and paying for parking. It’s fun, easy and good for your wallet! Make a gift instead of buying on for someone on your list!

Just Dance...

When was the last time you danced? I mean really danced?

Think about it…

Ellen takes 3 minutes out of her show every day and gets her whole audience to dance with her, we read all sorts of quotes inspiring us to dance but do we do it?  We drive our kids to hip-hop and sit and watch. Do you remember when you danced at socials until your feet were ready to fall off?  Jumping up and down and sweating like crazy, it was fun, energizing and great exercise.  We never cared what we looked like or if you could carry the beat. However, then life happens and for some reason dancing seemed to disappear from our activities.

Personally, I have taken some fun moments at home lately and just danced. My kids sometimes think I’m nuts and sometimes they actually join in but either way we all end up laughing either at each other or ourselves!  Just last week there was an awesome song playing on the radio fresh out of the shower and yes, I started dancing naked as a jaybird. It wasn’t pretty I’m sure but it made me feel free, inspired and fun.

I challenge you all this week to put dance back into your life. Dance in the privacy of your own home, car dance at the red light, dance during your coffee break at work see who will join you, head out to a club or create your own dance party at home…just dance!

This video might inspire you and at the very least I know it will make you smile…

We Day!

Me to We

Nov. 27, 2011

This past week in Winnipeg 16,000 school aged children from around Manitoba packed the MTS centre for “We Day,” which is designed to inspire and celebrate the youth movement for global change.

My 13-year-old daughter was fortunate enough to be one of those 16,000 children and experience an event that I hope will impact her life and way of thinking in a positive way for years to come.

I asked her to write a couple of paragraphs on her thoughts about We Day to share with our Happy Monkeys. Here is what she wrote:

We Day

We Day really was a once in a life time experience. Never again will I have the chance to listen to such positive and inspiring people.  I never knew how much someone could lose and still stay positive. There are people in this world who have lost a best friend or half their body. These people don’t live their life wishing they had their old life back, instead they love life and they still try to do as much as they can. They never gave up; they wanted to be the best they could be!

At We Day I also learned that people in other countries around the world really don’t have a whole lot. We are really spoiled and we should be thankful for what we have.

We can make a difference in this world no matter who we are. There are no negative words in this world, just negative people, we want to block out those negative people. We can do anything we set our minds to! It may not be easy but we CAN do it. No matter how old you are or how young we can make a difference in this world and we have to start today!

The energy created that day needs to be shared not only with the youth but with all ages. Happy Monkey Club’s goal is to continue to spread the message of positive thoughts and giving back to make a difference today and in the future.

I invite you to join us.
